Dr. Neil Katz is an NSU faculty member in the Department of Conflict Resolution Studies within the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. HE has served as a professor and administrator for over 50 years, and has been at NSU since 2009 when he came to assume role as department chair of Conflict Resolution Studies. In 2002, Katz was appointed as first Ombuds at NSU for the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences and the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center.
Katz has had many professional achievements; he
- Initiated and led 5 different academic and conflict intervention programs during his 37 years at the internationally renowned Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
- As Director of Training in Maxwell’s Executive Education Program, he presented workshops in leadership, negotiation, and mediation workshops to over 10,000 supervisors, managers, union leaders and employees in state and federal government.
- As Head of Neil Katz and Associates organizational consulting firm, he has led workshops in emotional intelligence, workplace mediation, negotiation, leadership, and conflict resolution to over 200 prestigious organizations throughout the U.S.
- Has specialized expertise in different psychological approaches including gestalt, overt and covert group dynamics, neuro-linguistic programming, and framing/reframing.
- Has authored or co-authored over 60 publications including books, book chapters, and scholarly journal articles including several publications on Organizational Ombuds in Higher Education, and three editions of Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills which has been in print now for 40 years.
- Served as one of the Head Researchers/Authors of 600+ page report on The Nature and Value of Ombudsmen in Federal Agencies (2016)
- Has received many accolades including the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award from the Syracuse community for career long commitment to nonviolent conflict resolution and the principles embodied in Dr. King’s life and work, the Distinguished Professor of the Year Award from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at NSU, and the William Kreidler Award for Distinguished Service to the Field of Conflict Resolution from the Association of Conflict Resolution, the premier professional organization in our area of expertise.
