The 37th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival will run from Nov. 4 to Nov. 13 and will have its opening night at the Hard Rock Seminole Ballroom. The Festival will feature more than 100 films from around the world, including “The Halls of Power,” a documentary film by three NSU students.
Janay Joseph, who graduated with a history major in May 2022, Graciel Quesada and Bianca Vucetich, who are both senior communication majors, created “The Halls of Power” over the course of around nine months, starting production around this time last year.
The story follows Elijah Manley, a young, black, LGBTQ+ activist, who ran for the Florida State Legislature.
It started as a six-minute documentary for a class assignment, but the three student filmmakers decided to take the story further to follow Manley’s journey on a deeper level and communicate it to more people. The film has been chosen for showcase at six different film festivals thus far.
“We have been working on this project for a year, and it has been hard to put everything together,” said Joseph. “We’re excited to see the people’s reaction to the story.”
